A rowing competition is better known as a rowing regatta. The events may be divided into a number of races, according to the classes of boats, rowers, or categories of gender, age and weight.

At the 2013 Sea Games, there were nine rowing events.

Single Sculls is an event where one athlete propels the boat towards the finish line by rowing with an oar in each hand. The single sculling boat does not have a coxswain. They should have the minimum weight of 14kg and the average length of 8.2 m.

Double Sculls is an event where two athletes propel the boat towards the finish line by rowing with two oars per person. The double sculling boat does not have a coxswain; they should have the minimum weight of 27kg and the average length of 10.4m. Most double sculling boats do not have a rudder, but steering can be done by driving harder on the side opposite to where you want to head to and pushing down on the foot stretcher to correct to course of the boat.

Lightweight Double Sculls is an event similar to double sculls. The only difference is the weight limit imposed on the athletes; the average weight of the women participating must not be more than 59kg, while the men's average weight must not exceed 70kg. The weight and length of the boat is similar to that of the double sculls event.

Lightweight Coxless Fours is an event where four athletes propel the boat towards the finish line by rowing with one oar each. Two rowers will row with their oars on the stoke side (right side of the boat) and two rowers will have their oars on the bow side (left side of the boat). It is without a coxswain and steering is done with a special swivelling foot stretcher. The average length of the boat is 13.4m and weighs a minimum of 50kg. As with the lightweight double sculls event, the average weight of women must not be more than 59kg, while the men's average weight must not exceed 70kg.

Coxed Eight is an event for eight athletes and a coxswain working together to propel the boat towards the finish line, using one oar each. Four rowers will have their oars on the stoke side, and the other four will have their oars on the bow side. The average length of the boat is 19.9m and the minimum weight of the boat is 96kg.
