Singapore para archer Nur Syahidah Alim has been elected to the newly inaugurated Asian Paralympic Committee’s (APC) Athlete’s Committee.

The 33-year-old was among five that won the most votes in a week-long voting process open to the more than 2,800 athletes in Jakarta for the 3rd Asian Para Games.

The four other spots filled by South Korean rower and winter sports athlete Lee Jeong-min, Japanese swimmer Junichi Kawai, field athlete Wang Yanzhang of China and Siham Masoud Muhail Alrasheedy from the United Arab Emirates, also from athletics.

Iranian powerlifter Siamand Rahman and Syrian field athlete Mohamad Mohamad were the other two candidates who ran.

The newly-elected Committee had their first meeting this morning (13 Oct) and Lee as chairperson, and Kawai as the vice-chairperson.

Syahidah, who was also recently elected Chairman of the Singapore Para Athletes Commission, is set to serve a four-year team in the committee. She intends to work towards giving more representation for para athletes and enhancing sports integration and inclusiveness in Asia.

“I feel really honoured to be elected into the APC Athletes’ Committee,” said Syahidah, who is the only Southeast Asian among the seven initial candidates.

“It is also heart-warming to see the vote of confidence given to me from my fellow Team Singapore athletes, as well as from other countries.

“It is important for Singapore to be part of Athletes’ Committee as we seek to bring more representation for the athletes from the Southeast Asian region.

“Having met my fellow committee members this morning, I can say our team is unique and proactive, and I believe we can give voice to para athletes from Asia.

APC President Majid Rashed congratulated the five elected athletes while saying: “It was a close-run election with seven very strong candidates.

“I’m pleased that all the athletes competing here were very engaged in the election process and we had a high turnout of voters.

“The Athletes’ Committee is a very important one for the APC as we want the athletes to be at the heart of our decision making.”

At the Games, Syahidah missed reaching the semi-finals of her individual event, losing her first career shoot-off to China’s Lin Yueshan. She also partnered Robert Fuchs in the team event where they reached the final eight.

As Singapore flagbearer of this Games, Syahidah led in the Singapore contingent during the Closing Ceremony at the Gelora Bung Karno Madya Stadium tonight, having done the same during the Opening Ceremony a week ago.
