Joining the community as #OneTeamSG in The Big Walk were our TeamSG athletes, who hoped to inspire the masses to keep healthy.
There was no need for intense races or high-performance training. As some 10,800 participants of the National Steps Challenge The New Paper Big Walk 2017 discovered, it was easy to keep fit and be a part of the nation’s sporting endeavours alongside our TeamSG athletes.
Held at the Singapore Sports Hub on Sunday morning, the party made their way on to Nicoll Highway towards the Marina Bay area before turning back, clocking a total distance of approximately 8.5 kilometres.

The Big Walk marked its first return to this particular route in more than a decade, and was flagged off by President Halimah Yacob. Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources & Ministry of Health, also graced the event.
Along with TeamSG sailor Ng Xiu Zhen and CP footballers Muhammad Shafiq Bin Ariff and Muhammad Danial Bin Ismail, the community got together as a big #OneTeamSG family to engage in a simple yet productive fitness activity.
The walk was an ideal way to engage the masses and raise awareness of the importance of sport in Singapore, as Shafiq reflected: “The community needs to get together to keep fit. We might be lacking in some aspects because Singaporeans are always so busy with other things. We should make time to be healthy!”

Indeed, the athletes hoped to inspire Singaporeans to incorporate more physical activity into their lifestyles, noting that it does not take much to do so – simply walking was enough!
“It’s very important for everyone to be fit, otherwise they might get sick and they’ll need to take a lot of medical leave and this might affect them in the long term,” Shafiq continued.
Danial agreed: “As people grow older, it’s important to keep their physical strength up. Activities such as walking and jogging will definitely help.”

This was certainly the case for friends Evelyn Lee and Ong Guat Choon, who were participating in the Big Walk both for the fitness and the fun. Professing to enjoy walking and jogging in their spare time, the pair finished their walk ahead of the main pack, and took the time to pose for photos at the finish line.

“It’s our first time doing this together, and [it’s] also a way for us to bond! There’s this sense of accomplishment too. Of course, walking is a good way to burn those calories, so it’s important that we get people out to start exercising,” Lee expressed.
For Ong, the notion of taking part in a fitness activity in such a large group, alongside TeamSG athletes as well, also formed part of the excitement: “It’s great that we get to come out together as one – and we get to mingle with the sports celebrities from TeamSG too!”
As Danial concluded: “It’s great that we get to inspire the public to take part in such healthy activities, and show that fitness is within reach. I hope to participate in more of such activities in future!”
