Zumba® is a fitness programme that is based on Latin dance rhythm and music which occasionally uses pop music and other genres of music. The steps are easy to execute, but at the same time effective and exhilarating.
“Zumba® is a combination of dance and fitness. The unique part is that you do not need to know how to dance. As long you love having fun and enjoy good music, you are in Zumba®,” said Natalie Nancy Tan, a Zumba® instructor from The Dynamites.
If you have children and are interested to enrol them in a dance fitness class, ActiveSG also provides Zumba® Kids and Zumba® Kids Junior programmes suitable for children aged 7 to 11 years old and 4 to 6 years old respectively.
Bokwa® was developed by fitness instructor Paul Mavi in Los Angeles and it went mainstream in 2012. Bokwa® participants draw out letters and numbers with their feet as a workout routine.
“In Bokwa®, one of the basic moves is the ‘101’ which is drawing the number one on the floor,” explained Bokwa® instructor Alexander Ow.
“Basically the participants move up two steps with a kick and move back two steps again, after which they will bounce twice and repeat that again.”
There are no traditional choreography and the steps are simple to follow. Classes usually start with a slow tempo for the beginners and when they are comfortable with the moves, the beat will go up a notch.

Masala Bhangra® was founded by fitness Guru Sarina Jain in 1999 and it infused both Bhangra and Bollywood moves for people of all ages and fitness level.
“This workout combines both the masculine side of folk dance from punjab and the acceleration move of Bollywood,” remarked Terence Teo, the first Masala Bhangra® Ambassador in Singapore.
The word ‘Masala’ means spicy in Hindi and Bhangra is a folk dance from northern India. So, for those that are keen to keep fit while basking in the lively and vibrant Bollywood music, this is definitely the class for you.
