Singapore will host the fifth edition of the World Junior Swimming Championships in 2015, at the Aquatic Centre of the Singapore Sports Hub. It is the first time the  Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) event is held in the Asia Pacific.

Singapore Swimming Association (SSA)’s President Mr Jeffrey Leow expressed delight after the announcement was made, stating his belief that Singapore will not disappoint having been given this wonderful opportunity.

He said, “We are honoured to have been awarded the 2015 World Junior Swimming Championships by FINA. The event demonstrates FINA’s confidence in our ability to host world class events and will give us a chance to showcase the upcoming Sports Hub’s Aquatic Centre to a world audience.”

The FINA World Junior Swimming Championships is held once every two years having first started in 2006, with the competition featuring swimmers under the age of 18. The competition has helped to unearth some of the biggest stars in swimming including Camille Muffat (France), who won one gold, one silver, and one bronze at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The next championships will be held in Dubai from 26-31 August this year.

Stars of tomorrow

“Singapore is proud to secure the rights to host the Championships. This is the event where the swim stars of tomorrow are unearthed and Singaporeans can now look forward to seeing some of the most talented youth swimmers in action,” said Mr Toh Boon Yi, Chief, Strategic Development and Marketing Group, Singapore Sports Council.

Singapore has previously hosted a series of high profile international swim meets, successfully hosting and organising the swimming competition of the first Youth Olympic Games in 2010, and the FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup series since 2007.
