#SGOUTRUNCOVID Virtual race smashed its target and culminated with a resounding success

Since its launch in June, #SGOutrunCovid, a nationwide solidarity initiative organised by Co-organization Pte Ltd in partnership with New Balance as part of the GetActive!Singapore 2020 campaign, is proud to announce a strong finish following the culmination of the virtual race on 8 August 2020. With 27,657 submissions collected from 5,083 participants, the #SGOutrunCovid clocked a final total distance of 168,326km, a remarkable mileage that is more than double its original target of 70,000km. The triumphant finish is especially uplifting during a time of SG55 celebrations as it demonstrated Singaporeans strong spirit and sense of unitedness as One People, One Nation and One Singapore during this COVID-19 period.

Over the 55-day countdown, the heart-thumping virtual race witnessed Singaporeans from all walks of life coming together to stay active as they raced towards the nation’s 55th birthday for one common goal – to outrun Covid-19 in Singapore and clock the distance for a good cause. New Balance had pledged to donate 50 pairs of shoes to local frontline medical workers for every collective 10,000km clocked. Heartened by the overwhelming response of the community and its public spiritedness, the global footwear brand promptly raised the total number of shoes donated to frontline heroes from 350 pairs to 500 pairs after the initial race target was enthusiastically met at the one-month mark of the campaign.

On 14 August 2020, Mr. Eric Chua, Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and Ministry of Social and Family Development was invited as the Guest-Of-Honour to grace a symbolic shoe donation ceremony at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Mr Chua said “Our healthcare and frontline workers have been working tirelessly to keep Singaporeans safe. In the spirit of SG United, let us continue to show our appreciation to these everyday heroes. I am happy to have contributed to the collective mileage clock, and I thank New Balance and Co-organization for their efforts. I encourage more corporate and community partners to step forward and rally Singaporeans during this challenging period. Together, we can emerge stronger!”

We would like to thank the organisers of #SGOutrunCovid and New Balance Singapore for the strong support to our staff, and for standing united in the fight against COVID-19. Many of our staff also stepped up to join in the challenge and we are glad to be aligned in promoting health, fitness and well-being among staff despite these challenging times. This initiative and goodwill has been a booster to both morale and health for healthcare frontliners and also the community who have also taken part to show support. said Ms Loh Shu Ching, Executive Director, Division for Central Health, TTSH and Co-chair of the TTSH Staff Wellness Committee.

“New Balance is extremely humbled to be a part of this meaningful initiative. The successful result is only possible through the collective effort of the community, and we are delighted by the campaign’s achievement in not just exceeding the mileage numbers, but also in bringing the spirit of togetherness and camaraderie amongst Singaporeans who have made their commitment to go the distance for a greater cause. We would never have come this far without the determination and passion of the participants who seized their “NOW” to make a difference.” said Mr Coenraad Hefer, New Balance Country Manager for Singapore and Malaysia.

Over the past two months, #SGOutrunCovid also further inspired and spurred on Singaporeans to collaborate and spearhead their very own #OutrunCovid initiatives within their communities. It saw self-starter individuals like a fitness instructor initiating step challenges for his friends and clients, hockey clubs and running groups rallying their members to run the distance, families (with children and even pets!) motivating one another to keep active as they contribute to the race, and education institutions like Nanyang Girls High School launching the #NYOutrunsCovid race where mileages were dedicated to the #SGOutrunCovid virtual race.

As part of the closure of the #SGOutrunCovid campaign, New Balance will be sharing a collection of inspirational community stories to spotlight on these Singaporeans who have made their mark through the initiative. Together, let’s celebrate the miles that have been shared together as we honour the #SGOutrunCovid community and continue to race on to fight the pandemic.
