In a move to improve on the high performance support for Team Singapore's national paddlers, the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) held a fundraiser dinner at the Shangri-La hotel last night.
The event was attended by sponsors, well-wishers, athletes and officials. It was graced by Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Speaker of Parliament & President of Singapore National Olympic Council. The dinner itself raised $430,000 through corporate donations and private contributions.
The 500-strong crowd was in a for a treat, as Ms Ellen Lee (President of STTA), had a special performance in store. The 62-year-old made her grand appearance into the ballroom midway through the dinner programme. She was dressed in a traditional costume suited for a Teochew Opera performance. Ms Ellen, with tremendous support from the audience, then went on stage to perform a short opera routine. Following her performance, inspired by her leadership and sportsmanship, the dinner attendees pledged several donations which totaled $43,400.

Ms Ellen Lee said: “We would like to thank our donors for their support towards Singapore table tennis. With the support that we have received, Singapore table tennis will go on to even greater heights. We are committed and we will continue to push on and score greater sporting glory for Singapore. Once again, I would like to express my deepest appreciation to everyone who has made their kind donations.’’
