The roof of the National Stadium was thrumming with youthful energy on Tuesday as 4,000 preschoolers, their teachers and parents, and Nila, the friendly lion mascot, gathered to launch the ActiveSG Gymnastics Academy.

Witnessed by Guest-of-Honour Senior Minister of State, Community, Culture and Youth, Sim Ann, the launch was held in conjunction with GetActive! Singapore 2019 and the Nurture Kids Festival.

Chief of ActiveSG at Sport Singapore, Lai Chin Kwang, shared his vision for an academy that will help provide quality coaching and programming for young people and improve the vibrancy of the sport ecosystem.

“The ActiveSG Gymnastics Academy is a good example of creating more opportunities and accessibility for children to learn, build confidence and participate in sport. By starting young and making physical activity a way of life, I believe we will see more Singaporeans adopt healthy living and being motivated to be lifelong active citizens.”

With plans to engage over 500 children over the next year, ActiveSG Gymnastics Academy will partner with Singapore Gymnastics to create beginner programs that concentrate on developing fundamental movement skills through exploration.

“The KinderGym programme will allow children to experience and love movement,” said Karen Norden, General Manager of Singapore Gymnastics.

“In partnership with our affiliated clubs, Singapore Gymnastics is excited to deliver programs that will produce athletes on par with the best in the world, and also encourage all Singaporeans to lead active lives from an early age,” she continued.

Paul Teo was there with his daughter for the launch and applauds the initiative.

“My daughter is very playful and I hope that if she joins the ActiveSG Gymnastics Academy, it will help her channel some of her energy and make new friends,” said Paul.
