It didn’t matter that the morning sun was beating down, or that many of them were doing it for the first time, as 35 seniors from Cornerstone Community Services gamely took to the dragonboat paddle and made waves at Kallang Water Sports Centre early on Saturday (Aug 10) morning.
They were joined by 45 volunteers, including students from Republic Polytechnic, as part of SportSG's Active Enabler Programme to promote sports among seniors. The activity was also part of this year’s edition of GetActive! Singapore, an annual week-long festival to celebrate National Day through sports.

After a safety briefing, participants wasted no time to board their boats, with everyone making sure to look out for their senior teammates. The boats made their way through the Kallang River, and they had a friendly race to end things off.
“Our boat only had two guys, and one of them was the oldest participant today who is 94. I guess we all kind of underestimated him but he really contributed a lot,” said Ms Ng Wei Qing, 19, a Cornerstone volunteer. “This was really fun and I would definitely do it again.”

69-year-old Madam Chan May Chee shared her experience: “After this GetActive! Singapore dragonboating activity, I feel happier and more energetic. I hope that ActiveSG can organise more of such sports for us seniors so we can all feel younger!”
Mr Allen Goh, Programme Chair of Republic Polytechnic School of Sports Health and Leisure and facilitator of the event, said: “To young people, old people or even working adults out there, sport is a perfect platform to bind everyone together. There’s something for every one of us, be it individual or group sports, high-performance, mass participation, elite sports, amateur sports - there’s a whole spectrum of it for people from all walks of life. Think of something that you would want to do and work with ActiveSG to get active.”
