The Singapore Slingers found themselves breathing a sigh of relief after narrowly beating Saigon Heat with a score of 78-70 on Sunday (February 10) at the OCBC Arena.
In their third meeting against the Vietnamese team this season, the Slingers started out strong as player of the game, Jerran Young, led the way with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Big man John Fields, as well as forward Delvin Goh, both also managed doubles (16 points, 15 rebounds; 12 points, 13 rebounds).
Going into halftime 23 points ahead, Neo Beng Siang’s men started to lose steam from the third quarter of the match as they struggled to maintain a safe lead against the visitors.
“The second half was a real nightmare for us. We were not really pushing the ball and were trying to force through every shot which basically killed us in the offence,” said Slingers’ head coach Neo.

The Slingers managed to squeeze through to victory with a narrow margin despite the Saigon Heat’s unrelenting efforts, landing a third place spot in the league table.
“It’s too early to say now [if we will make it for the playoffs] as there are still a lot of games to come, we will need to get a couple more wins to be secure.”
Neo said of his expectations for the team’s upcoming appearance in Malaysia: “Definitely we want to win, but we first have to take care of our own business, playing good defence by running the floor and playing as a team.”
Slingers will go against Westport Malaysia Dragons in the next home game on Sunday, February 24 at 4pm.
