Why you should attend the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon? (even if you aren’t running)

Held in the first week of December since 1982, Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) has been taking place annually for the past 36 years, with 2019 being the 37th edition. Whether you are a health nut or a lover of marathons, here are three reasons why you should attend the SCSM even if you’re not running.

1. One of the biggest runs in Singapore

The SCSM is one of the most highly anticipated marathons, not just in Singapore but across the region. Last year the marathon saw participants from across 100 countries coming to Singapore just to participate in the race. In addition, this year, the 700m Kids Dash will be taking place at the F1 Pit Building to give them the chance to experience how the adult marathon runners feel, while those from 11 years onwards can take part in the 5km community run to challenge themselves with something different.

2. Change in flag-off time

This year SCSM is doing something different for the very first time by changing the flag-off time from the wee hours in the morning to 6pm in the evening instead. The attempt to change the flag-off time aims to attract more participants as well as to generate a bigger crowd to push the SCSM to be one of the Abbott World Marathon Majors’ marathons to take place. In addition, holding the marathon in the evening may prove to be more conducive for runners given the cooler temperatures and lower levels of humidity.

3. Spectator-friendly route

Unlike the years before, this year’s race will feature a spectator-friendly route through some of Singapore’s most iconic streets and modern architecture such as Gardens by the Bay, Singapore Flyer as well as the colonial buildings of the Civic District. With the new change in flag-off time, not only will marathon runners be able to watch the city light up after dark, spectators are also welcomed to cheer the runners on at the new spectator-zones throughout the route.

For runners who would like to participate, registration is still open and you can still enjoy a discounted rate if you sign up before September ends.

Come join the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon this year, even if you are not participating, just to spread your positive energy around the area and cheer the runners on. You can also watch the city come to life as people from all over come together to run towards a common goal.
