The Singapore National Youth Ice Hockey team has won their first game against Indonesia in the match that kicked off the Southeast Asian Youth Cup (S.E.A. Youth Cup) in Bangkok, Thailand on 3 September 2018.
The 6-1 smashing score was a sweet victory as Singapore lost to the Indonesian team for the bronze medal in the inaugural S.E.A. Youth Cup in Malaysia last year.

Said Joewe Lam, National Coach of Singapore National Youth Ice Hockey Team and Director of Singapore National Men’s Ice Hockey Team: “The members of the national youth team have been undergoing intensive training of up to 10 times a week leading up to this competition, at times past midnight. They are now one step closer to their goal of bringing home a medal and glory to Singapore in this tournament.”
The S.E.A. Youth Cup is an annual tournament to develop the sport of ice hockey in Southeast Asia for youths in the Under-16 category. Thailand played host this year and teams from the other participating nations - Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore have gathered in Bangkok for the tournament from September 3 to 7, 2018. Singapore will be playing against Malaysia on Wednesday, September 5, followed by Thailand on Thursday, September 6, with the last game on Friday, September 7, against Philippines.

Singapore’s team of 11 main players aged between 13 and 15 is the smallest contingent among the competing countries as several members had to drop out of this year’s competition due to national examinations such as the PSLE and GCE ‘N’ Levels. Some are also finding it hard to fund the costs of ice rink rental for practices that take place 2-3 times a week. All costs, including airfare and accommodation associated with the trip, are borne by the players and coaches themselves.
The Singapore Ice Hockey Association has started a campaign on Giving.sg to raise $30,000 by September 9, 2018 to help defray the hefty costs.
Members of the public can contribute and help the local youths fly the Singapore flag.
