National Youth Ice Hockey team hopes to bring back medal from Southeast Asian Youth Cup

Twelve young ice hockey enthusiasts from Singapore have been training till midnight at times, hoping to bring back a medal for their country at the Southeast Asian Youth Cup in Bangkok this year.

The boys, between the ages of 12 and 15, are part of the National Youth Ice Hockey Team representing Singapore at the annual event. Thailand will play host this year and teams from the participating nations - Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore - will gather in Bangkok for the tournament from September 3 to 7.

Joewe Lam, National Coach of Singapore National Youth Ice Hockey Team and Director of Singapore National Men’s Ice Hockey Team, said: “In preparation for this competition, members of the youth team have to undergo grueling trainings till midnight on a weekday and more training and practice games on weekends. They have only one goal; to bring home a medal and glory to Singapore in this upcoming tournament.”

The S.E.A. Youth Cup is an annual tournament to develop the sport of ice hockey in Southeast Asia for youths in the Under-16 category. Malaysia hosted the inaugural event last year.

The Singapore Ice Hockey Association has started a campaign on to raise $30,000 by the end of August 2018 to help defray the costs of participating in this competition. Members of the public who wish to contribute and help the local youths fly the Singapore flag high in Bangkok can do so in the form of donations.

Donations can be made through via the link, by cheque payable to “Singapore Ice Hockey Association” or bank transfer to DBS Bank account no. 065-900469-5 (branch code 065). All donations are eligible for 250% deduction of the amount donated from the donor’s total statutory income.
