The Singapore Badminton Open 2018 rallies up to a close

From 17 to 22 July, the Singapore Indoor Stadium was served with some amazing court action. As part of the HSBC BWF World Tour Series, the Singapore Badminton Open 2018 brought some of the best badminton players together as their skills decided who would emerge top.

Supporters and fans were treated to the likes of Taipei’s Chou Chien Ten who, in 2016, became the first Taiwanese shuttler to win the Chinese Taipei Open GP men’s singles title in almost two decades. Sayaka Takahashi, the younger sister of Olympic gold medallist Ayaka Takahashi, also brought her tactical awareness and reflexes to the court.

Both Chou and Takahashi were crowned champions in the Men’s and Women’s categories respectively. The following are the rest of the results:

 

Men’s Singles

Women’s Singles

  1. Sayaka Takahashi (JPN)

Men’s Doubles

  1. Mohammed Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan (INA)
  2. Ou Xuanyi and Xiangyu Ren (CHN)
  3. Han Chengkai and Zhou Haodong (CHN)
  4. Angga Pratama and Rian Agung Saputro (INA)

Women’s Doubles

  1. Ayako Sakuramoto and Yuikiko Takahata (JPN)
  2. Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida (JPN)
  3. Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai (THA)
  4. Isabel Herttrich and Carla Nelte (GER)

Mixed Doubles

  1. Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Jamie Lai (MAS)
  2. Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir (INA)
  3. Akbar Bintang Cahyono and Winny Oktavina Kandow (INA)
  4. Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai (THA)

 

The true underdogs were Malaysia’s Mixed Doubles Team, Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Jamie Lai, who went on to beat Indonesia’s Olympic gold medallists and veterans Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir. It was a tough match as both teams came close with scores of 21-19, 21-18 in Malaysia’s favour. In the end, the best team won. Congratulations to all participating members and to the Singapore Badminton Organisation for hosting such a prestigious event.
