Albirex Niigata edged out Tampines Rovers 2-1 at the National Stadium on 31 March 2018 during the 2018 Great Eastern Community Shield to emerge as winners of the season opener once again.
With the opening fixture showcasing the new Singapore Premier League logo as the backdrop of the stadium, spirits were high during the game. Taku Morinaga scored a penalty in the 59th minute while Mustafic Fahrudin managed to equalise with a thumping header in the 77th minute. However, Tampines Rovers were unable to overcome Albirex Niigata when Shuhei Hoshino scored their second goal in the last minute, ensuring that they retain the Community Shield for the third year running.
