TODAY ran a story over the recent weekend about how local swimming legend Ang Peng Siong changed the life of 19-year-old UK Shyam 17 years ago.

It turns out that back then, Shyam was working at an American Diner as a waiter. Things got so bad that he was eating patrons’ leftovers because he could not afford to pay for meals. He even found himself stranded at stadiums after training on several occasions because he didn’t have enough money to take the bus home!

The poor lad persevered for a while but it got too much for him to bear in 2000. He decided to call it quits and gave up on his dream to beak the 100m record held by athletics legend C Kunalan.

But fate had other plans for this young man. A chance encounter with Ang Peng Siong turned his life around and the rest, as they say, was history.
