Here are the three main reasons why you should make it a routine to exercise with your significant other.
It’s always a chore to drag yourself down to the gym after a long and tiring day at work, but if you work out as a couple, it makes exercising just that little bit less tedious with the added social and romantic elements.
Exercising with your partner will also no doubt provide motivation for you to exercise harder. Constant words of encouragement from the other party will help you complete that crucial remaining reps in the gym.
A 2013 study in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships found that husbands who care about fitness engage in more physical activity when their wives offer encouragement.
Love and happiness
Couples who engage in physical activities together report feeling more satisfied with their relationships and more in love with each other according to an article in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology in 2000.
Feelings of happiness and love are the result of hormones such as serotonin and oxytocin, and exercising and spending more time with your loved ones stimulate the production of these hormones in your body.
Besides having an activity that you both can participate in together and a common goal that you can work towards, exercising together and coordinating your exercise routines can also help strengthen your emotional bond with your partner.
Running at the same pace or lifting weights at the same time creates non-verbal matching, which psychologists say help people feel emotionally attuned to each other.
Many studies have been done on this topic, and all evidence suggests that couples who sweat together, do in fact stay together.
