Quah Ting Wen’s Olympic experience proved to be a brief one after she failed to qualify from her heat in the women’s 100 metre butterfly on Saturday.
Ting Wen’s time of 1.00.88 was more than one second slower than her qualifying time for Rio - 59.83 and was only good enough for third-place in Heat 2 and 35th place among the 45 competitors.
The 23-year-old looked distraught as she left the pool in tears and declined to speak to reporters about a result that seems hard to explain.

Ting Wen made her Olympic debut in Beijing in 2008 and won four gold medals in the SEA Games last year. She was the only female Singaporean swimmer to make it to Rio.
Younger brother Zheng Wen will feature in three events at Rio beginning with the100m backstroke on Sunday.
