It is about pride, national fame and glory at the Singapore National Games (SNG) 2016. Organisers of the biennial Singapore National Games, however, has sweetened the deal for participants by offering some S$220,000 cash prizes across the 16 sports, and 5 para-sports.
The SNG2016 takes place from 30 July to 7 August 2016 as part of GetActive! Singapore
, the week leading up to Singapore’s 51st birthday that will consist of sports festivals, community initiatives and competitions island-wide.
Winners of the various sports will win cash prizes of up to S$300 for individual open category events, and up to S$1,500 for open category team events when they come in tops.
Mr Lai Chin Kwang, Chairman of the Organising Committee of GetActive! Singapore said: “We recognise the intrinsic values and the collective memories SNG can bring to the community. It gives everyone the opportunity to have fun, demonstrate mutual respect, fair play and play as One Team Singapore while celebrating National Day. This can definitely bring us closer through training and competing together. Beyond this, the cash prizes will add some spice to the competition and spur the participants to do better.”
While registration for the Singapore National Games are still open till 15 July 2016, a number of sports have already seen athletes who have represented Singapore in the 28th SEA Games and 8th ASEAN Para Games register as participants. Spectators can expect to see Team Singapore sporting stars from Archery, Floorball, Athletics, Basketball, Boccia, Volleyball, Canoeing and Para Table Tennis compete at the Games.
Mr Lai also urges non-athletes and aspiring athletes to jump on this opportunity to test themselves. “It is good for budding talents and sports enthusiasts at-large to pit themselves against the best. It’s an opportunity to be seen as a diamond in the rough, and potentially get spotted by national and club coaches.”
With 488 events across the 21 sports, interested participants can register online or at all ActiveSG Sports Centres till the extended deadline of Friday, 15 July 2016.
Reiterating that there is a sport for everyone, regardless of age or ability, Mr Lai shared that: “The Singapore National Games is back with more sports and a suite of sports try-outs for supporters. We hope that all sports enthusiasts and aspirants will take the plunge, and sign-up for the Games, be it as an individual, or with a team, to play as One Team Singapore competitively and celebrate the nation’s birthday through sports.”
