The Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) Selection Committee, chaired by Minister Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister for Social and Family Development and President of SNOC, met today to consider the athletes who have made the cut and have been nominated by the National Sports Associations (NSAs) to be part of Team Singapore at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games.

Twenty-one athletes have earned quota spots through their respective sports’ Olympic qualification process. A larger list of athletes was also given the in-principle endorsement, subject to their International Federations’ qualification criteria and confirmation, as well as NSAs’ internal selection processes – which will all conclude in July 2016.

As part of the IAAF’s (International Association of Athletics Federation) universality places policy, Team Singapore will also be represented in one male and one female events in Athletics if there are no qualified athletes. The qualification period will end 11 July 2016 and the IAAF will inform National Olympic Committees (NOCs) of the qualified and universality places by 14 July 2016.

Likewise for FINA (Fédération Internationale de Natation), NOCs that do not have a qualified swimmer in either gender may also enter one swimmer to participate in one event, subject to eligibility criteria laid out by FINA.

Mr Chris Chan, Secretary-General of the SNOC, said: “For the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, we have confirmed 21 athletes and three pending confirmation from the International Federations and the National Sports Associations which means there will likely be 24 athletes representing Team Singapore – one more athlete than the 23-strong athlete contingent at the London 2012 Games. More than half of the contingent will make their debut and there are also seasoned campaigners who are participating in their second or third Olympic Games. We look forward to a positive outing in Rio.”

Mr Low Teo Ping, Chef de Mission for Team Singapore at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, said: “We are excited counting down to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The support teams have been working hard behind the scenes to help the athletes prepare for the Games. Sports such as swimming, sailing and shooting have done well in qualification, setting a record number of athletes qualifying on merit for these sports. We look forward to flying the Singapore flag high in Rio.”
