Netball Singapore and the Ministry of Education (MOE) has launched a new Primary School Netball Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) resource to guide teachers and coaches in designing age-appropriate and progressive netball training programme for primary school students aged between 10 and 12 years old. This is the first time a National Sport Association has collaborated with MOE to develop a CCA resource.

The comprehensive resource includes guidelines and activities, such as sample training sessions to develop the technical and tactical netball skills for students. The resource would also guide teachers and coaches in the inculcation of core values and life skills such as resilience and teamwork through playing netball.

A series of training workshops will also be organised for netball CCA teachers-in-charge and coaches on the use of this resource. The first of these workshops will be conducted in May by Australian High Performance Coach, Ms Julie Hoornweg, who was instrumental in developing the resource. About 100 schools are expected to be trained through these workshops by end 2017.

“This partnership is a step forward for netball in Singapore as it provides a coordinated approach towards the development of the fundamental skills of the students at a young age which provides a strong foundation that teachers can build on to further develop their technical competencies. At the same time, core values are taught through netball and we hope to cultivate players into confident and self-directed people and also citizens who are concerned with the community and our nation. The Primary School Netball CCA Resource is a start and we are looking at working on a resource for the secondary schools too,” said Jessica Tan, Member of Parliament, President of Netball Singapore.

Divisional Director of MOE’s Student Development Curriculum Division, Ms Liew Wei Li, said: “We are happy to work with Netball Singapore to develop this practical resource. It will guide teachers and coaches to impart a love for the sport, good technical skills, values and character in our students. It translates the purpose of school sports CCA into every coaching session.”
