I recently got my hands on a one-day ticket (courtesy of Sport Singapore's Team Nila) for the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series that was held in Singapore at the National Stadium from 16 to 17 April. It was very exciting as this tournament featured 16 of the world’s top Rugby Sevens powerhouses from around the world. Being a newbie, I did not understand the sport of rugby very well as it was my first time watching it live. Furthermore, in Philippines, where I came from, rugby is not as popular as it is in certain European countries.

On event day, it was fascinating to see that many of the fans were dressed up together with their friends to support their favourite teams. Some were decked out in their countries' flags, while others were dressed up as cartoon characters and warriors. This certainly made for a unique and mind-blowing experience for me as a spectator.

Creativity was the word of the day when it came to costumes for the fans. Photo: Julian Enriquez/ Team Nila
During the games, the crowd went wild (see below) every time the referee whistled for a try or conversion, hampering my attempts to try to ask my fellow spectators what the fuss was all about! (laughs)

Overall, I enjoyed the game even though I wasn't in a costume. Every game was extremely intense and heart-stopping, not to mention the fact that the players were truly world class. It was a great experience for a first-timer and now I can proudly declare that I am a rugby fan!
