Protein is an important factor in promoting the growth of muscle mass as well as its maintenance. While protein shakes are certainly not as miraculous as some advertisements claim them to be, they can be good avenues for weight loss and muscle gain.

If you are still on the fence about these shakes, here are some pros and cons to help you weigh the decision on whether to start consuming them.

PROS

Effectiveness in weight maintenance
Protein shakes have proven to be effective in helping to lose weight. Weight loss occurs if you don’t take in more calories than you lose. Hence, if you were to replace a calorie-laden meal with a shake that contains less calories, you’ll be shedding those kilos in no time, if you accompany this practice with exercise.

These shakes should also keep you full for a longer period of time since protein is the most satiating nutrient. Just remember to couple the shakes with the right diet and exercise.

Convenience
Drinking a protein shake is faster, easier and more convenient than preparing a full meal. When we’re pressed for time, it may be tempting to just grab a burger at a nearby fast food place or a bag of chips, or worse, skip meals altogether. Why not replace these less healthy alternatives with a protein shake that you can gulp down in no time, without sacrificing your nutrients. Protein shakes are also great if you are travelling long distances and face difficulty locating a place to eat.

CONS

Cost
Prices of protein shakes can vary widely, so you should consider the cost per serving before committing to a particular product, especially if you’re thinking of using it for a long time.

Powders cost less than ready-to-drink shakes but don’t forget the expenses of additives such as milk substitutes, fruit and flavoring into your calculations. If it proves too much for your wallet, you may be better off buying protein-rich foods such as chicken and lean meat to supplement your diet instead.

Limitations
Though protein shakes can aid in losing weight, they are limited in what they can do for you and your body. You can’t lose weight if you don’t reduce your calorie intake, and your muscles certainly won’t develop if you don’t exercise regularly. Hence, the best way to use shakes is to include them as part of a plan that includes the right exercise and diet to help you achieve long-term fitness and health.
