What’s Car-Free Sunday?

Cars are part and parcel of everyday life for many Singaporeans. We rely on them to take us to work, back to our homes after work and for leisure. However, with heavy traffic on the roads during weekends, it could be refreshing to do without our trusty mode of transport once in a while.

Brought to you by the folks at Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), Sport Singapore, Land Transport Authority, National Parks Board, National Arts Council and Health Promotion Board, the next Car-Free Sunday will be happening on 27 Mar 2016

This awesome initiative, announced at the end of 2015, is part of the Government’s plan to encourage a “car-lite” culture.

For this second installment of the initiative, roads will be closed to from 7.30am to 10am instead of 7am to 9am. The walking, running and cycling route will now include Esplanade Drive, forming a 5km car-free stretch – comprising St Andrew’s Road, Stamford Road, Esplanade Drive, Fullerton Road, Shenton Way and Robinson Road.  Connaught Drive will also be closed from 7.30am to 7pm to host a variety of community sporting events and activities.

Which means that you have the perfect excuse to leave your car at home, cycle, walk, jog or take the public transport to the CBD area with your family and friends to soak in the atmosphere and enjoy a lovely Sunday morning.

This is also good news for parents who do not have to fret over where to bring their kids during the weekends!
