Events such as the ActiveSG Athletics Fiesta on Saturday play a vital role in introducing children to the sport, said ActiveSG Chief Lai Chin Kwang.
Saturday’s event at the Home of Athletics, which was organised in conjunction with Singapore Athletics, allows children to experience track and field events in a fun environment.

“This ActiveSG cooperation and Singapore Athletics Association is really to create opportunities for kids from a young age to start getting active,” said Mr Lai.
“In the longer run, what we hope to do, is to establish an ActiveSG club at various zones so that kids from various ages can actually take part and live better.”
“We also want every kid to start off learning their fundamental movement skills through our clubs before they actually start to play other sports as they grow old,” he said.

Among the children who participated in Saturday’s event, most were just curious about athletics competitions and wanted to have some fun.

“I wanted to know how a competition is like so that’s why I came here,” said 6-year-old Aditya Kumar, whose favourite event that day was the hurdles race.
Moving on, the inaugural Athletics Fiesta will be a regular feature in the Singapore Athletics’ sporting calendar and provide more sporting fun to many more children in Singapore.
