Ahead of this weekend’s Standard Chartered Marathon, Singapore’s largest force of sports volunteers – Team NILA – is also getting ready for one of the biggest challenges of this year.

Last year’s Standard Chartered Marathon saw more than 50,000 participants from 111 countries, and this year’s competition will likely see similar numbers.
With such a long route and large number of participants, managing the various aspects of the race becomes an extremely demanding task.
To alleviate the problems faced by the organisers, Team NILA is sending over 300 volunteers to help out at Singapore’s biggest marathon race.
Ranging from route marshals to athlete welfare, these volunteers take on a variety of roles to ensure the marathon runs as smoothly as possible.
While promoting the spirit of volunteerism, Sport Singapore hopes to expose these volunteers to various sporting scenes through working with various event organisers and national sports associations. This, in turn, creates a meaningful experience for the volunteers.
“We would like to open volunteering opportunities and expand Team Nila exposure to work with various event organisers in Singapore sporting scene, ranging from Rugby to cycling to marathons,” said Pauline Lee of the Volunteer Management department in Sport Singapore.
“Sports volunteerism helps to drive the Vision 2030 agenda through enabling many sports-related programmes, activities and events, for instance, through volunteer participation in events such as Rugby 7s, OCBC Cycle and SCMS.

“Through event involvement, we hope to capture the hearts of the people by boosting Team NILA’s impact to the community through the culture of giving.”
The hope is that, with Team NILA’s involvement in sports volunteerism and setting an example for everyone, more people would start to pick up volunteerism, taking one more step in making the world a better place for everyone.
