Most of us eat out quite frequently. These meals and snacks are often laden with too much salt and fats.
Why not make some healthy yet tasty food options from the comfort of your home?
We’ve all had a packet of potato chips before, and those things are addictive! One healthier alternative you can make at home is apple chips. All you need is an apple and some cinnamon sugar.
Slice the apple thinly using a knife or a grate, and lay the slices out on a tray. Sprinkle some cinnamon sugar onto the slices – the amount is entirely up to you, but less sugar means less calories. Bake the slices in an oven until the water content in the apple has evaporated and the slices turn crispy.
This is an especially healthy snack you can make at home, as apples are naturally sweet and do not require much spice or seasoning to embellish the taste. At the same time, since the chips are baked and not fried, you can eat as much as you want without guilt.
Instead of finishing an entire store-bought yogurt carton, why not use it to make your own healthy alternative?
What you need for this is about four cups of milk (preferably low fat or skim milk, if you want an extra healthy snack) and about three tablespoon of yogurt. Heat the milk in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the temperature of the pan reaches approximately 180 degree celsius, before adjusting the heat to low and leaving it for around 30 minutes. Once done, let the heated milk cool to around 110 degrees before adding the yogurt. Place the mixture into a jar and let it sit in a relatively warm place for eight to 10 hours, or until the texture resembles that of custard, before refrigerating. If you prefer a thicker texture, leave the mixture to sit for longer.
A staple for weight-watchers and people with no time in the morning for breakfast, granola bars are extremely healthy and provides you with plenty of energy. One simple way of making your own granola bars requires oats, peanut butter, almonds and/or any other nuts of your preference, as well as maple syrup. For a healthier recipe, replace the maple syrup with honey.
Heat the peanut butter and maple syrup together in a pan over low heat until the consistency of the mixture is creamy. Next, mix the almonds, oats and other nuts in a separate bowl before adding the peanut butter and maple syrup mixture. Once evenly mixed, pour it onto a greased baking tray and press hard on the mixture to ensure that the ingredients stick together. Bake in oven until golden brown, before flipping the granola over and baking the other side. Once done, let it cool and you can cut it into small bars before enjoying them.
