Ever wondered what foods would boost your memory or what snack would help keep you awake in class? Look no further; ranging from optimal breakfast foods to kick start your day to perfect snacks for late night studying, here is a list of foods aimed at keeping you focused:

Whether uttered by our parents or teachers, the saying of “fish is brain food” is common knowledge for most people.  As it turns out, the adage is indeed true.

The magic lies in the high concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids found in most fish.  These fatty acids are essential to proper neural function, so eating foods high in omega-3 help to improve our focus.

These forms of healthy fat have also been linked to lower occurrences of dementia and can also lend a hand in boosting memory, further proving its remarkable impact on brain health.  

Whole grains
While delicious, eating refined carbohydrates such as cookies and white rice can lead to increased lethargy and mental dullness, after the initial sugar spike. That is certainly not the right mental state to be in when faced with an important examination.

Instead, opt for whole grains such as oatmeal and brown rice when dining. Not only will these help you improve and retain your focus, it will also keep you mentally alert throughout the day.

While you may find yourself going nuts during exam week, it may still be a good idea to literally apply that to your diet. Similar to fish, many types of nuts contain high levels of fatty acids that help your brain achieve optimal performance. As a bonus, nuts also contain a good amount of iron and are high in unsaturated fat, making them great sources of energy.

So don’t forget to include almonds, pistachios, and walnuts to your list of midnight studying snacks!

Dark Chocolate

Before you go grabbing any chocolate bar in sight, note that only a certain type of chocolate is good for the brain – the dark variety. Dark chocolate is not only known for improving memory, but it also induces increased blood flow to the brain, hence improving mental alertness. In fact, the darker the chocolate, the greater its impact will be on your brain.
