Last Friday, more than 1,000 soldiers took part in the Army Dragon Boat Regatta which was jointly organised by the Singapore Army and the Singapore Dragon Boat Association.

A total of 48 teams from various formations and units took part in the event with the objectives of building cohesion and teamwork as well as strengthening inter-unit bonds with a spirit of fierce and fair competition.

Divided into two categories, Shark (NSF Category) and Orca (Open Category), the day's competition saw our fighting men and women taking turns to paddle 22-crew dragon boats along a 500 metre course in the scenic Marina Channel.

In the end, 1st Commando Team 1 won the Shark category and HQ 9 Div took top honours in the Orca category, narrowly beating out HQ 6 Div.

“During his opening address, then Chief of Army, Major General Perry Lim, said that participation and training for the dragon boat regatta had relevance to the armed forces as it helped build team work and spirit among the army units.

"I'm not here as a guest of honour, I am here to compete with all of you," he said to the loud cheers of the servicemen and women, after which he proceeded to launch the Army Dragon Boat Regatta 2015 with the striking of a ceremonial gong.
