Butterfly specialist, Joseph Isaac Schooling (below) was crowned Athlete of The Year in the annual ST Athletes award ceremony, designed to honour Singaporean athletes who have done extremely well in regional/continental and global competitions.
Held at the Raffles Hotel, this award ceremony is in its 7th year. Schooling’s win is only the second time a male athlete has won this award, after Safuwan Baharuddin clinched the award last year. This year’s award was given out by Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth & Second Minister for Communications and Information.
Up against a strong field consisting of YOG Gold Medallists Bernie Chin & Samantha Yom, Asian Games Champion, Jazreel Tan and Aloysius Yapp from Cue Sports, Schooling thanked his supporters via a Skype call that was transmitted live, in the Raffles Hotel Ballroom. Schooling is currently doing his undergraduate studies at the University of Texas in Austin, in the United States of America (USA).
Schooling said: “I’m really honoured. This is like the second biggest award after the Singapore Sports Awards and I’m looking forward to doing Singapore proud at the SEA Games in June.”
Having won medals at the Commonwealth and Asian Games level, Schooling will now set his sights towards Rio 2016, where he will be vying to be the first Singaporean to win an individual medal in swimming. In the meantime, fans will wait with bated breath to see how many Gold medals he can claim in June’s South East Asian Games.
