Casual and, even more so, serious runners don't have a lot of options when it comes to activity trackers. The Jawbones
of the world can accurately track your steps taken, distance traveled, and calories burned throughout the day. They can't, however, accurately track the steps you take and distance traveled while running.
Runners previously had to a wear a GPS watch while working out and then swap it out for an activity tracker for the other 23 hours of the day. Luckily, this is no longer the case. The recently announced Polar M400 watch can track both your runs and daily activities.
Similar to the Garmin Forerunner 15
, the M400 includes a GPS for accurate tracking of your pace, altitude, and distance while running. It will also store your personal records and notify you when you set a new one, along with providing tailored training targets and motivational guidance each week. Like other activity trackers, Polar's watch, which is water-resistant up to 30 meters, can track your steps taken, calories burned and quality of sleep.
Battery life is an ever growing concern with wearables today, but it seems like the M400 will do just fine. The company notes in its press release that the watch should last roughly 9 hours while running with the GPS, and up to 24 days as an activity tracker.
Just like on the Forerunner 15 and Vivofit
, the M400 will alert you on your wrist and through the Polar Flow app if you are inactive for an extended period of time. In addition to displaying tracking information, the app, which is available for both Android
and iOS, also promises to help users achieve their personalized activity goals.
The Polar M400 will be available in the US for $200 this fall, or $250 when bundled with the company's H7 heart rate sensor. In the UK you will be able to get the M400 for £130, or bundled with the heart rate sensor for £170. Without the sensor in Australia, the M400 will be AU$230, and with it the bundle will be AU$300.
