Singapore’s brand new Singapore Sports Hub will host our first international event – the 6th World University Floorball Championship 2014 at the OCBC Arena from 18th to the 22nd June 2014.

This is the first time the World University Floorball Championship (WUFC) is being held outside of Europe, having made its way to Singapore.

Jointly organised by the Singapore University Sports Council (SUSC), the Singapore Floorball Association (SFA), and the International University Sports Federation (FISU), the WUFC is supported by Sport Singapore (SportSG). This 6th edition of the WUFC will see ten participating countries represented by 10 men’s and six women’s teams. The ten countries are: Czech Republic, Finland, Japan, Malaysia, People’s Republic of China, Republic of Korea, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland and Singapore. (Please refer to the attached Annex for the Ranking of the teams for the Championship). This will be the second international floorball competition the Republic has hosted, the first being the World Floorball Championships in 2005.

A biennial event, the 2014 WUFC in Singapore will see the highest number of teams participating to date, since its inauguration in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2002. Finland emerged champions of that first competition in which only eight men’s teams participated.

The women’s teams commenced participation in the 3rd edition of WUFC which was held in Finland in 2008. Sweden’s women have firmly made their mark in the last three competitions as the team to beat.

Says Mr Alan Koh, Chairman, WUFC 2014 Organising Committee, “It is an honour for Singapore to be the first city outside of Europe to host the WUFC. The participation of ten countries and sixteen teams is the highest number yet in this series of competitions. Many Singaporeans including me will be able to see the high standard of play by the best floorball players from around the world. Here, in addition to watching these top-notch games, I hope that Singaporeans will also take the opportunity to learn from the best. I am also very glad that the 2014 Championship will be held at the new Singapore Sports Hub OCBC Arena with support from Sport Singapore.”

Having made its way into the 2015 SEA Games next year - another milestone event that Singapore will be hosting – the sport of floorball has definitely caught the interest of Singaporeans in many ways. Mr Mohd Sani, President of the Singapore Floorball Association who has been closely involved in the acceptance and development of the sport in Singapore and the region adds, “Over the past 10 years, floorball has grown from being a niche activity to one that is played as a mainstream sport in many schools and institutions. It is easy to play this fast-paced team sport and the challenge of perfecting a variety of dribbling and shooting skills makes floorball extremely attractive to many youths in Singapore. The popularity of the sport has gained traction in the region. With floorball’s inclusion in the 2015 Southeast Asian Games, we expect to see further developments in the skills of our players and in the areas of coaching and refereeing.”

Mr Toh Boon Yi, Chief of Strategic Development and Marketing Group comments, “We are excited by this new inclusion in Singapore’s sporting calendar, and SportSG is happy to support the 6th World University Floorball Championship 2014. We have been seeing the sport’s growing popularity in Singapore and the WUFC will allow Singaporeans to witness some of the world’s best university floorball teams in action as they pit their skills on court. We hope that this event will further strengthen its fan base in Singapore and inspire people to live better through sport.” The teams will be staying in the Athlete Village which will be located in the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the site for the inaugural Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games Village.
