Football innovation is set to take another step forward, judging from the latest developments from the laboratories of sports companies such as Adidas and Nike.

Adidas unveiled its Primeknit FS, which the company touts as the world’s first all-in-one knitted football boot and sock hybrid. The Primeknit FS is essentially a footwear that extends from the toe to the calf, offering a second-skin feel for the perfect fit. It reportedly offers superior flexibility and comfort, but with the stability and strength of conventional boots.

The product is currently being treated as a “concept model”, though Adidas says it is working with top players to finalise the development of the product in time for the 2014 World Cup held in Brazil this June. A worldwide limited edition run of 150 pairs will be made available for fans to buy once it is ready.

“The one piece design and strong light yarns of the Primeknit FS is expected to provide new levels of flexibility and comfort with stability and strength equal to that of conventional boots,” said Adidas in a statement. Indeed, each yarn receives a high precision coating that guarantees water resistance even in the most challenging conditions.

On its part, Nike has also taken the wraps off a new football boot called the Magista, which was also developed for the upcoming World Cup. Born from years of research and development by its Sport Research Lab, the boots have an appearance that looks like half sock, half traditional soccer shoe. Under the hood, the Magista incorporates the company’s Flyknit technology to feel like an extension of a player’s body and offer an experience akin to that of running bare-foot.

An thin layer that is thinner than a single sheet of paper offers protection for the foot from water and the cold, while Brio cables knitted directly into parts of the shoe delivers structural strength akin to that of a suspension bridge. Finally, a 3-D knit texture on the surface of the shoes provides sufficient friction for use in dribbling and striking.

Enough said. Bring on the World Cup!
