In a nationwide effort to combat growing health issues of overweight and obesity, the Health Promotion Board (HPB) launched its 1,000,000 KG Challenge on March 15 at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza.

Gracing the event was Dr Amy Khor Lean Suan, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Health.

“1.7 million Singaporeans, we estimate, have a body mass index which is 23 or higher, and at risk of obesity-related diseases. About 1 million Singaporeans are pre-diabetic or suffer at least one chronic condition,” she explained in her opening speech.

Through this challenge, she hoped that it would “heighten awareness of healthy weight management” by providing that “simple nudge to begin the journey to good health.”

Various booths and performances were put up to promote healthy living, which included Food and Beverage companies such as Subway, Mr Bean, Gardenia and Smoothie King, as well as a Yoga demonstration and Zumba Kids, which got the crowd up and jumping on their feet. Participants were also given the chance to make pledges which were displayed on a wall for public viewing.

In line with the efforts of HPB, the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) organised a string of engaging activities – Nordic Walking at their booth, as well as Bokwa and Zumba Kids on the main stage.

Nordic walking, though not a common sight in Singapore, was a well-received activity at the event. It is a simple sport that requires the walker to brisk walk with a pole in each hand, swinging his arms along as he walks. This form of walking engages both lower and upper body muscles, consequently burning more calories than regular brisk walking.

“We hope that people will pick this up quickly because it is a beautiful type of workout…Walking outside in nature is an excellent way to exercise," shared Sandra Linnemann, a Nordic Walker.

Similarly, the Bokwa and Zumba Kids, two back-to-back stage demonstrations stirred much hype among the crowd. Both activities involved aerobic workouts with a range of intensities, and attracted both parents and children to dance along.

“Personally I feel it is a very good startup for beginners because it is very low impact,” said Jesling, who participated in the Bokwa workout.

Peggy, a fellow participant echoed her sentiments, adding: “It’s very good… we get to lose weight together.”

This is the first time the Sports Council has organised such activities, and it definitely will not be the last. In the coming months, Nordic walking (urban trekking programme), along with other family-friendly workouts will be introduced at Sports and Recreation Centres islandwide.
