The Singapore National Games (SNG) 2014 started out with a blast by holding multiple sports events at the Singapore Sports Hub.
Of the 12 sports played on the first day, 10 were hosted at the state-of-art complex.
The Stadium Run was held at the Promenade while Basketball and Hockey 5s were played at OCBC Arena Hall 1. Following which, Table Tennis and Badminton games were played in OCBC Arena Hall 2. Finally, the Netball competition was held in Hall 3.
The Singapore Sports Hub was only opened in June this year. Thus, it was fairly new to many participants.
Zoe Chu, who participated in the Badminton women’s double category, was fascinated by the Sports Hub’s facilities. It was also her first time playing on a Yonex rubber mat and it was vastly different from what she was used to.
The OCBC Arena Halls were divided into two sections with two sports ongoing at the same time. This allowed participants to take a look at how other sports were being played while they were taking breaks for their games.
“Personally I like the idea. Since everything is under one roof. We can check out other games, while waiting for our turn as well. So it is a good idea.” according to Dong Leng, who was participating in the Hockey fives in the open category.
“It makes meeting up with friends much easier. For example, I saw a friend of mine playing in the female category today. So that was a good thing. ” added Adrian, who was playing the men’s basketball 5v5 open category.
Despite the bad weather in the morning, the Stadium Run went on as usual without any disruption since the run was in the Sports Hub’s sheltered-Promenade itself.
Dave, who participated in the Open Men Category, does his own runs frequently from Marina Bay Sands to the Stadium with his friends.
“Especially when it rains and you cannot run outdoor. This is a really good place.” He shared.
Marathon runner Stuart Haynes agreed, “When the rain comes, you can just come here, you still get to do your laps as usual.”
