7 of our Team Singapore athletes took a day off and emersed themselves in a whole day of fun with our Young Team Singapore Ambassadors

Young Team Singapore Ambassadors (YTSA) enjoyed a day out with Team Singapore athletes at the YTSA S.P.R.I.N.T event on 6 September. Joining the ambassadors were, Gary Chow and Timothy Loh (Judo), Kwok Shu Yi and Pamela Liew (Netball) as well as Vignesa, Kumaresa and Syazni (Floorball).

Inspired by the popular Korean variety show ‘Running Man’, the participants had to complete a series of missions around Nanyang Polytechnic to earn the clue to the next game’s venue. Over at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, the final showdown took place where the participants had to eliminate their opponents by ripping off the name tags on the back of the shirts.

Besides the fun, the event aimed to forge a stronger bond between YTSAs and Team Singapore’s athletes. It also allowed the latter to recognise the ambassadors who have always supported them and cheered them on at the competitions.

“This event was planned differently from the ones we had in the previous years, getting Team Singapore athletes involved for the very first time. We had concerns over how the YTSAs would bond with the athletes but it turned out great with the athletes being really spontaneous,” said event organiser Jacelyn Poh.

The participants only found out about the guest appearances of the national athletes before the start of the event. The surprise move was definitely a well-received one as the ambassadors greeted their new teammates with loud cheers and applause.

“I am a netballer myself and have been watching our national players very closely to pick up a skill or two from them. I have attended many of their competitions with my fellow YTSAs to cheer for the team. Today has been a really special experience for us as we get to make friends with the athletes and compete alongside them in many different activities,” said Irwin Shah Amirul.

“I enjoy watching our athletes in actions and cheering for them with my friends. I was so excited to meet all the athletes in person today,” echoed Ang Wei Ting.

The athletes themselves too enjoyed the bonding session, as they met with fellow sportspeople from the different field.

That, in addition to meeting the supporters, made for a successful event all in all.

“I feel that the event is very good for both the athletes and the YTSAs. Despite having them in the stands cheering for us during competitions, we have not gotten much personal interaction with them before today’s event,” said netballer Kwok Shuyi.

“They are extremely friendly and made us feel so welcomed. Ultimately this event is very well organised and we just want to have fun.”
