In the track and field scene in Singapore, there are many kinds of races that target the grassroots community to give future track and field athletes a holistic development.

In light of these principles, the Singapore Athletic Association (SAA) held the annual 63rd Herbal Pharm Cross Country Championships featuring categories like the junior, youth and open, at the Bedok Reservoir on 18 January 2014.

“This race would serve as a platform for the students to gain experience for the coming track competitions during March this year,” said Ghana Segaran, organiser of the race. Ghana also currently serves as the national coach for the middle and long distance and has coached people like Team Singapore’s Mok Ying Ren, who won the gold medal at the recent Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

Herbal Pharm was the sponsor of the event and the motive was driven behind a passion for track. Vejaiyan, owner of Herbal Pharm, was a national middle distance runner himself and even managed to achieve a bronze medal at the ASEAN games. Having ran the race himself back in the 90’s; he felt that he had a strong urge to give back to the track and field scene because running in his blood. He sees that the Singapore’s track and field scene will continue to grow stronger over the next five years.

As the event came to a close, many of the young track runners had their own fair share of fun and also bonding with their friends through competitive running. Mr C.Kunalan was also seen amongst the volunteers of the race cheering the athletes to do their best.

Shohib Marican, J1 of Raffles Institution who won the Men’s Youth category said: “The race was very exciting and we’ll all work harder for the nationals!”

As a group of young and motivated sports talents start to emerge yet again, the future of the running scene in Singapore seems great.
