Students from the National University of Singapore (NUS) Rotaract Club came together to organise  the Waves of Hope Swimathon 2013 on the 7th of September at Yio Chu Kang Swimming Complex, a charity event to raise funds for Pathlight school.

Themed “For Youths, By youths”, over 400 participants took part in the event in its second year running, with participants from 17 participating schools from around Singapore such as Anderson Secondary School, Methodist Girls’ School, Singapore Institute of Management and Singapore Management University.  Alongside the participants were also special needs youths who showed their support, as well as students from Pathlight School.

Proceeds from the event would be donated to Pathlight School to fund holistic programmes to help children with autism, as well as to raise public awareness on autism and debunk its misconceptions.

“I think such events will help to raise public awareness on conditions such as autism. The funds this year will be channeled to poor and needy students at Pathlight so that they will be able to come to school,” explained Ms Loy Sheau Mei, Vice Principal of Pathlight School.
Participants in the swimathon took turns to swim laps to show their support for the event. There was also a special teachers’ category for the swimathon where the teachers from the participating schools took part swam as well.

“I think the response to this event has been great, as compared to last year’s. In this event, we hope that the swimmers will learn more about Pathlight School and the condition of autism”, expressed Ang Seng Yang, Project Director of Rotaract Club NUS.

Singapore's First Charity Swimathon Event

Waves of Hope Swimathon is Singapore’s very first charity swimathon event. It was first held in 2012 at the Tampines Swimming Complex and had 270 participants from 10 participating schools that raised a total amount of $20,710. This year saw a greater number of participants and greater aims to raise at least a total of $25,000.

In conjunction with Vision 2030 “Live Better Through Sports”, the event encourages participants to give back to the community through sports participation, while promoting keeping fit and leading healthy lifestyles at the same time.

Donations to the beneficiaries can still be made through the event website at the following URL:
