A look inside the National Basketball League

Established in 1967, the Basketball Association of Singapore (BAS) still stands strong today as the organizers of the longest running basketball league in Singapore, the National Basketball League (NBL). Boasting over 49 teams in the Senior Men's category alone across three divisions, the sport has definitely taken a prominent stand in the Singapore sporting scene, but the league itself is still not recognised by the masses.

As the NBL grows with the years passed, stronger contenders join the league in hopes to be crowned as Singapore’s best basketball team. Along with old-timers like the Home United Basketball Club, SAFSA , Eng Tat Hornets and Siglap who have been previous league winners, there have been new additions like Adroit Sports Association and Tampines West CSC Majestic Basketball Club who have been performing well in their early stages this season.

BAS has put in motion several championships such as the Senior Women’s National Basketball League 2013 and the National Basketball League 2013 Senior Men / Under 23 in a bid to encourage participation among local enthusiasts. The tournaments will give players an opportunity to showcase and hone their skills through the spirit of competition.

The most anticipated NBL Senior Men category holds a total of three different divisions, namely Division 1, Division 2 and Under 23 Division. The tournament rounds for this category runs from the 11th of August all the way up til the 20th of October at the Singapore Basketball Centre.

“There is definitely room for growing and it is our job to make it big. Basketball is one of the most participated sports in Singapore but it is just that we don’t see many of them”, expressed Kenny Xu, Communications and Commerce Manager of the Basketball Association Singapore.

Following the hype from the recently concluded NBA 3X Singapore 2013 tournaments rounds, there is no doubt that the teams in this season’s NBL will be stepping up their game to show their opponents more professional gameplay and sportsmanship. Members of the public are more than welcomed to be part of the spectators for the tournament on match days.
