Velocity @ Novena Square, Sunday, June 2, 2013 --- Pearlyn Koh of Pei Hwa Presbyterian Primary School and Josh Chua of Catholic High School (Primary) won the right to represent Singapore at the Crocodile Challenge Cup organised by the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA).
The two winners will play for Singapore in the ITTF World Hopes Week and Challenge on from June 9 to 17, 2013, an event hosted by the Werner Schlager Academy in Schwechat, Austria.
In the Girls' Primary 5 and 6 singles final, Pearlyn Koh of Pei Hwa Presbyterian beat Jassy Tan of Nan Hua Primary School 3–1 (7–11, 11--3, 11--8 and 11--9). Despite losing the first set, Pearlyn came back strong to win the next three sets. The last set was especially hard-fought as both contenders matched each other point for point, their eyes fixated on the tiny orange ball.
Pearlyn, who is a Primary Six student, was emotional with tears of joy. "I felt that I played well. I used everything I had learnt."
Rigourous training was essential. "I trained up to seven times a week. When competitions were coming up, I trained everyday."
For the boys' Primary 5 and 6 singles final, Josh Chua of Catholic High brought home the gold when he beat Beh Kun Ting of Maris Stella High School 3–1 (14–12, 8–11, 11–9, 11–7). The first set kept onlookers on the edge with three consecutive deuces before Josh won that set 14--12. Kun Ting won the next set 11–8 to even things up but Josh proceeded to claim the title after winning the last two sets.
Josh, who is also a Primary Six student, was all smiles after the final. "I was very nervous during the competition. He (Beh Kun Ting) is also a very good player. I am very happy!"
