Singapore, 6 June 2013 – Singapore’s National Football Academy U-15 and U-16 boys are ready to take on their international counterparts in the 25th Canon Lion City Cup.
Kicking off this Saturday, 8 June, the Cubs will face the likes of Eintracht Frankfurt (Germany), PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands), Arsenal FC (England), and Corinthians (Brazil) in the six team annual tournament for youth sides.
Both NFA teams have been busy with preparations over the past month, with coach Nazri Nasir’s U15s taking part in the FAM-Frenz U15 Champions Trophy in Pahang in which they lost to tough teams in Frenz United and Thailand’s Chonburi FC, while Robin Chitrakar’s U16 boys travelled to Osaka, Japan where they clocked up a 4-1 win over Osaka Toon High School but suffered two defeats, one of which was to powerhouse Cerezo Osaka’s U18 side.
Both NFA teams will be kicking off their campaign this Saturday at Jalan Besar Stadium, with NFA U15 hosting SC Corinthians (Group B) in the earlier kick off at 6.00pm, while NFA U16 will take on Arsenal FC in the 8.45pm fixture.
The NFA U16s will be looking to go one better than the two previous editions of the tournament, in which they reached the tournament’s showpiece but lost to Flamengo (2011) and Ajax Amsterdam (2012) at the final hurdle.
The week long 25th Canon Lion City Cup tournament will culminate in a Final on Sunday, 16 June 2013.
