Sun, sea, sand and plenty of netball was on offer when the Mission Foods Beach Netball Festival turned Siloso Beach at Sentosa into a frenzy of fun, fast-paced competition on Sunday 3rd March.
Forty teams participated across three categories – Women’s Open, Corporate/Mixed Open (both 18-35 years old), an Women’s U23. Each team played at least ten matches during the day and all were aiming for the top prize of $1,000 along with a host of goodies from sponsors Mission Foods, Banana Boat, Laurier and Fitness First.
Matches began at 10am and after the initial group stages in the morning, everyone enjoyed some pizza for their lunch and a few hours out of the baking sunshine.
The heat was turned up on the court after lunch when teams began fighting for final places. Some close encounters ensued with players enjoying the soft surface under-foot which meant they could dive around in attempt to capture every pass being played.
By 4pm the top two teams in each category had been decided and so to the final matches.
Sparta was crowned as the 2013 Women’s Open champions after defeating last year’s champions Murderers 6-5.
The Corporate/Mixed Open final was contested between Frenz and MOE 10. Coming out on top - for the second year running - were Frenz after a final whistle goal gave them an 8-7 victory.
The Women’s Under 23 contest was decided between X-Saints and TCS 4 with a final score of 5-0 going in favour of TCS 4.
Prize presentations followed the cheers of delight from the champions and everybody enjoyed posing for a photographer on stage with their prizes.
The event was once again supported by Mission Foods, who gave all the participants goodies to take home and enjoy as well as giving out free chips all day long!
Sales Manager for Mission Foods, Singapore, Jovis Teoh came down to catch some of the action. He said, “Mission Foods are delighted to be sponsoring the Beach Netball Festival once again. The company believes in following a healthy and active lifestyle so is a great fit for us and the players seem to really enjoy the food hampers we have given them too.”
Cyrus Medora, Chief Executive Officer of Netball Singapore said, “The Mission Foods Beach Netball Festival is an event we created four years ago and it’s fantastic to see how it has grown in popularity each year.
“It’s a fun beach activity that offers our regular netballers something different, and also attracts a new crowd to the sport as it’s relaxed and the format is very simple for everyone to play.”
The sun has set on a fantastic event and we can’t wait to get the sand between our toes once again next year.
