Sponsorship deal in cash and kind valued at SGD$2 million will see the introduction of the most expensive and high-tech race shirt in local running event history

In celebration of International Women’s Day, X-Bionic will also throw in a pair of running tights to encourage all participants to pledge donations to the Breast Cancer Foundation and Singapore Council of Women’s Organisation

[28 November 2013] – The Singapore Athletic Association (SAA) today announced a landmark sponsorship deal worth SGD$2 million with X-Bionic, which will see the Swiss premium sports apparel manufacturer become the official title sponsor of the Venus Run 2014.

The X-Bionic Venus Run 2014 is an all-women 5km run to promote healthy living through active participation in sports so as to enable women to achieve healthy balanced lifestyles amidst their demanding responsibilities at work and at home. Following the success of last year’s event, the next race will once again take place at the Marina Barrage on 8th March 2014, in celebration of the International Women’s Day.

As part of the cash and kind sponsorship deal, X-Bionic will introduce the most high-tech first race shirt in local running event history, with features that aim to specifically help women achieve better race performance. The specially designed, one-of-its-kind pink coloured X-BIONIC® Venus Run Effektor shirt (Please refer to the attached factsheet on the X-Bionic Effektor technology) is also undoubtedly the most expensive race shirt ever, with a retail price of SGD$180.

Only 5,000 pieces will be manufactured exclusively for this event and will feature the X-Bionic Venus Run 2014 logo as well as the official tagline “Diamonds aren’t my best friends, running is…”, both of which will be woven into the fabric rather than printed on so as not to reduce the breathability of the shirt.

Said Ms Li Jin, General Manager of X-Bionic Singapore: “X-Bionic is proud to come on board as title sponsor for the Venus Run in 2014. While it is not the only all-women running event in Singapore, it is arguably the most meaningful as it is held on International Women’s Day.

“X-Bionic is a young brand, and a relatively unfamiliar brand in our part of the world, but we felt that this event would be the perfect platform to introduce the brand, technology and our revolutionary Nerino G fibre yarn to the masses in Singapore. I believe this is the most serious and technologically advanced race shirt ever for any local mass running event.”

Along with the news of the title sponsorship, race organisers Singapore Athletic Association (SAA) also announced that the fourth edition of the running event will be targeting a new record 5,000 signups, doubling last year’s registration figure. For the first time, the event will be held in the evening, with a 5pm flag-off unlike previous editions.

In line with the event’s theme of celebrating the fairer sex, the SAA also announced initiatives to help raise funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF) and the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations (SCWO), which counts the Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE) as one of its members.

SAA will be donating a portion of the proceeds to the two charities, while one can also purchase BCF badges online, which will then be included in their race packs. X-Bionic, on their part is encouraging all participants to pledge additional donation amounts to the two women’s charity organisations during the online registration process by throwing in a pair of X-Bionic running tights worth S$160 as part of the race pack, on top of the Race Shirt.

Speaker of Parliament Mdm Halimah Yacob, the first woman to hold the post in the Republic’s history, will grace the event and take part in the race in celebration of the International Women’s Day. Said Venus Run Organising Chairperson Ms Lee Yan Lin, who is also the SAA’s Women’s Committee Representative: “We are delighted that X-Bionic has come on board as our first title sponsor for the Venus Run 2014. We know the X-Bionic race shirt will prove to be a draw and we will see more women sign up for the event next year. It doesn’t matter if you are not an accomplished runner or have never attempted a competitive run before, as a 5km run is a good starting point before embarking on longer race distances.

“Besides encouraging women to get started on a healthier lifestyle, we also wanted to create awareness of women’s issues like breast cancer and most importantly, to celebrate International Women’s Day together as a community. So we are very happy that Mdm Halimah Yacob has agreed to take part next year.” SAA President Mr Tang Wei Feng was of no doubt that this sponsorship deal represents a real coup for the athletics governing body.

He added: “We are pleased to have X-Bionic on board with us as we once again organise the Venus Run in line with the IAAF’s aim to promote sports among women. The event has grown from strength-to-strength since the inaugural race in 2011 when just a little more than 300 women took part. We were very much encouraged by the turnout earlier this year, which is why with X-Bionic onboard as title sponsor this time round, we are aiming to double the figure next year.

“And I am confident that all 5,000 slots will be taken up pretty quickly as well despite the slight increase in registration fee. After all, which other event can boast of such quality high-tech race shirts? Along with other sponsored products, the value of the race pack alone is worth more than $400! So this event represents amazing value for money.”

About Venus Run
In celebration of the International Women’s Day, Venus Run is born! It’s a 5km all-women run organized by Singapore Athletic Association. With a 5km leg route, the Venus Run is targeted at women who have never attempted a competitive run before, as well as those who are already addicted to the chase.

The Venus Run was initially conceptualized as a team run for women to encourage camaraderie among women, promote interaction across age-groups and promote a healthy lifestyle among senior women. The inaugural Venus Run was first introduced in 2011 and was held at Bedok Reservoir, with just over 300 participants. There was a hiatus of a year before the event returned in 2013 at the Marina Barrage with more than 2,000 women taking part.
