The vibrant mixture of jerseys and fun filled entertainment throughout the day lit up the Kallang Netball Centre as it hosted the first ever netball corporate challenge. The main sponsors, M1 Singapore decorated the venue with flags and balloons.
The event saw a huge turnout of a forty-eight teams participating. The teams consisted of busy working adults as they made time off to have a bonding session with their colleagues. Organizations that were present included the LTA, Keppel, Milo, Sentosa, IRAS, and many others.
Cyrus Medora, CEO of Netball Association Singapore, indicated that he was very pleased with the turnout. “We even had to turn down a few corporate teams because of the influx of organizations that were willing to sign up!”, beamed Cyrus.
The main buzz of the event was at noon when the exhibition match took place between Members of Parliament (MPs), M1’s Senior Management and local journalists from Straits Times, TODAY and The New Paper. The MPs were led by Mr Lawrence Wong, Acting Minister for Culture Community and Youth. The other parliament members included Mr Seah Kian Peng, Ms Jessica Tan and Mr Teo Ser Luck.
The first match was closely fought as the MPs and M1’s Senior Management tied the game at 2 -2. With their undeterred fighting spirit, the MPs showed their prowess by edging the local journalist 1 - 0 during the second showdown.
Mr Lawrence Wong said, “This is my first time playing netball and we only had one training session which I couldn’t make it, I hope I made some contributions to the team but I had a lot of fun for the 15 minutes!” He further added, “I think it’s very good that companies like M1 are coming forward to not only sponsor but promote sports in the community.”

The event was pushed back slightly due to the heavy downpour after lunch but this did not deter the proceedings as the emcees and organisers quickly activated their wet weather programme to keep the crowd entertained.
After an hour of waiting, the teams resumed their games. The top team was Deloitte & Touche LLP which ended the final match against IRAS with an overpowering score of 11 - 4, displaying relentless offence throughout the game. The champions walked away with a prize money of $4,100.
Zhang Ailin, Associate of Deloitte & Touche LLP said, “I’m very happy that we got the win but more importantly, I got to enjoy quality time with my colleagues because we’re usually busy when we’re working!”
The M1 Corporate Challenge proved to be a success event in the spirit of getting corporations to embrace and benefit from the value of sport and is a step towards achieving Vision 2030
