Singapore retained its title as Asia's best sports city at the Ultimate Sports Cities Awards, held in Quebec City, Canada on 22 May at the SportAccord International Convention.

Organised every two years by the prestigious SportBusiness Group, the awards pay tribute to the world's top sporting hosts.

"We are pleased to be named the best sports city in Asia and we are committed towards building a diverse events strategy, one that will help us create a dynamic and sustained sporting culture in Singapore," said Mr Lim Teck Yin, CEO of Singapore Sports Council.

London claimed the crown as the Ultimate Sports City for the first time in the history of the awards, with Melbourne and Sydney sharing the podium in second and third place, respectively.

The story was picked up by international news agencies and websites around the world. The Hong Kong Sunday Morning Post recently ran a story praising Singapore for its 'bravura' in hosting events.

Alvin Sallay, sports columnist for the Morning Post, described Singapore as "Asia's World City" and a tiny country "unafraid to think big".

Other Asian cities represented in the Ultimate Sports Cities rankings included Tokyo (11th), Dubai (14th), Doha (17th), Kuala Lumpur (20th) and Pyeongchang, South Korea (21st).

Singapore maintained its position in the top 10 with a 6th place ranking, just behind New York and Manchester. We scored well on our event experience, infrastructure and culture. In 2011, we hosted major sporting events such as the Mission Foods World Netball Championships, International Table Tennis Federation's (ITTF) Volkswagen Women's World Cup, the FINA/ARENA World Cup, and our own Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore, which won the IAAF Gold Standard accolade last year.

Well done Singapore! Let's keep up the good work and help everyone in Singapore live better through sports.
