Singapore had been awarded the rights to host the 9th Asian Netball Championships in 2014.
The Singapore Sports Hub multi-purpose indoor arena (MPIA) is due for completion in March 2014 and is set to stage the eight-day contest which will feature 10-12 nations. The competition will also act as the Asian qualifier for the 2015 World Netball Championships with the top two teams earning their place.
The dates chosen will be 7 to 18 September 2014 to coincide with the local school holidays in Singapore and also avoids some of the key events in a busy sporting calendar for 2014 around the world that includes the FIFA World Cup in Brazil in June, the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow (23 July- 03 August), the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing (16-28 August) and the Asian Games in South Korea (19 Sept - 04 Oct).
Singapore last held the Asian Championships in 2005 when they picked up the coveted trophy for the first time in front of 3,000 fans at Toa Payoh Sports Hall (venue for this year's Nations Cup 2012).
There are also a busy few years ahead on the world's netballing calendar before the spotlight turns, once again, on Singapore as a host nation.
The Asian Youth Netball Championships have been confirmed to be held in Brunei from 30 June to 07 July 2013. The following month will see the World Youth Netball Championships take place in Glasgow, Scotland from 22-31 August. Singapore will be represented at both events, and will be the only Asian nation heading to Glasgow.
The World Youth Netball Championships will serve as a major test event for Glasgow ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games where netball is one of the most hotly contested sports. However with only the top 12 nations earning a spot, there will be no Asian representation. Singapore are currently ranked 18th - the highest placing Asian nation following their victory at the Asian Championships held in Sri Lanka in August.
The next World Championships will return to Australia who will host the event for the third time (last held in Australia in 1991). It will take place in Sydney at the Olympic Park precinct from 09-15 August.
