SportCares matches dollar-for-dollar to raise S$240,000 for Special Olympics Singapore

Singapore, 22 September 2012 - Team Singapore athletes Gary Yeo (sprinter), Lim Heem Wei (gymnast), Geraldine Lee (canoeist), Theresa Goh (swimmer) and Nurulasyiqah Mohammad Taha (boccia player) were present last Saturday to lend their support to Maybank Singapore’s Global Corporate Responsibility Day, in which funds collected by Maybank Singapore were channelled to Special Olympics Singapore through SportCares.

SportCares is a newly-launched initiative under Vision 2030, which aims to use sport as a force for social good. Through SportCares, the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) had committed to provide dollar-for-dollar matching for funds raised by MayBank, helping to bring the initial sum of S$120,000 raised from the event to S$240,000.

A fun fair was held at ITE College Central (Bishan) to raise funds for Special Olympics Singapore, a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing sports training and competition for persons with intellectual disabilities. All donations went towards supporting Special Olympics Singapore’s National Games, which will be held in June 2013.

Mr Lim Teck Yin, Chief Executive Officer of Singapore Sports Council, paid tribute to the bank’s effort in uniting the community through sport.

He said: “We are heartened by the support from Maybank in embracing sport as a key driver for their corporate social responsibility initiatives.”

“Maybank’s philanthropic efforts truly exemplify the spirit of Vision 2030, which is to enable all Singaporeans to live better through sports. We hope more organisations from Corporate Singapore will recognise the value of sport as a force for social good and use it as a platform for their CSR efforts.”
