Hockey: Korean women warm up for Rio 2016 with friendly win in Singapore

The Korean National Women Team are here in Singapore taking the advantage of Singapore’s weather and hockey facilities as part of their preparation for the 2016 Rio Olympics. It’s winter in South Korea now and make sense to bring their team to train in Singapore weather’s as it’s summer Olympics.

In their build up towards the summer Rio Olympics the Korean National Women Team took on the Singapore Men National Hockey Team on 10 Jan 2016. The game is now played in four quarters of 15 minutes, with a two minutes’ time out between 1st/2nd quarter and 3rd /4th quarter and a 10 minutes break between 2nd/ 3rd quarters. This new rule was implemented September 2015. Sea Games 2015 was played in 35 minutes each half with a break of 10 minutes.
The Korean Women’s team started with caution as team lost 2-0 in their first practice game against Singapore Men Team. As the match progress and the Korean feeling stronger and acclimatize brought the game to Singapore’s side. No scores in the first quarter.

In the 2nd quarters the Koreans were a transform team. Their wingers and central striker created havoc in the Singapore half. Singapore Team defended well but the Korean Team came on stronger. The first goal was scored when the Korean left winger took a hit from the top of the ‘D’ towards goal and the alert central striker deflected the ball into the goal post which caught the Singapore goalkeeper off-guard. Score 1-0 to Korea.

The Singapore team did not give in to Korean Team an easy way out too. They too came back strong in the 3rd quarter forcing the Korean Team to three plenty corners but the Koreans known as the Asian Giants defended well. Koreans were fast on their counter attacks and were rewards with their second goal.

In the 4th quarter the Koreans team took their foot off the pedal, with the Korean team's coach very careful not to bring about any injuries to their players as they constantly rotated their players. This was to prevent hamstring, quadriceps or abductor injuries as the players were still are acclimatizing to the weather and Astroturf playing surface.

Final Score Korean Women’s Team 2 and Singapore Men 0.
The Koreans Women Team will be taking on the Netherlands who are currently the World Champions on 12 01 16 at 1700hrs at Sengkang Hockey Stadium. It is also winter in the west thus Teams like Germany will be also be arriving to be part of the tri-nation pre-Olympics preparations.
Koreans Women Team will be also playing friendlies with Germany and Australia Women Teams.
