Sneakers Ace triumph in Netball National League final by fine margin

31 August, 2015   Sport Singapore

Held at Toa Payoh Sports Hall, the finals of the National League saw the top two teams in division one and two matched up for a winner takes all show down. Sneakers Ace edged their division one rivals Fier Orcas by two goals while division two winners SRC Blue beat Llabten Thunder by a solitary goal.

The league, first held back in the 1960s, saw 83 teams across 12 divisions (nine for women and three mixed) battle it out over seven weeks of intense competition. The top two teams from the first and second division would then meet in the final.

In the division one final, Singapore netball heavyweights Sneakers Ace took on a young Fier Orcas team. Fier Orcas had the better exchanges in the early stages of the first quarter but Sneaker Ace's experience saw them claw back the lead from a three goal deficit.

The teams tied scoring in the second quarter with both sides putting the ball in the net 14 times.

In the third quarter, Sneakers pulled ahead thanks to the perfect conversion rate of rookie goal attack Wong Peiying and experienced stalwart Yasmin Ho.

But they would have to endure a nervy last few minutes as their opponents reduced their lead to just two goals. In the end, Sneakers Ace closed out the game with some intelligent possession play.

"(The National Netball League) is a breakthrough," Sneakers Ace captain and national player Anna Su said.

"Our team not only came together for the league we've been working together for the past year including NSL (Netball Super League), through this season we have worked together and gelled better."

When asked about her team's chances in next year's NSL, Su said: "We did very well in the previous one to come from behind and emerge as champions so definitely the pressure is on us to maintain the title."

Fellow national player and Sneakers Ace goal shooter/attacker Yasmin Ho added the team "prepared very hard for this (Netball League)" and that the opponents "gave us a good fight today"

Division two finalists SRC Blue and Llabten Thunder squared off first at 1.00 pm. The teams finished at the top of their division and last met in the league in July where SRC Blue won the match by one goal. History was to repeat itself in the final as SRC once again emerged victorious by one point.
