“Celebrate the Extraordinary” is the slogan of the SEA Games and that is exactly what thousands of Singaporeans did at a sold-out Opening Ceremony at the National Stadium on Friday night which saw about 40,000 people coming together to mark the start of an extraordinary Games.

The sold-out Opening Ceremony was a three-hour spectacle, where the audience were given the opportunity to enjoy extensive multimedia projections, light and sound displays, colourful costumes and dazzling aerial props. Also featured were many of the country’s most respected theatre artists and with music from the album ‘Songs of the Games’ featuring a team of budding Singaporean artists that are produced by music director Sydney Tan.

Around 4,000 athletes from the eleven participating nations marched into the stadium, before Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Lawrence Wong welcomed the guests.

Officially declared open by Dr Tony Tan, President of the Republic of Singapore, the ceremony also saw Micky Lin, netball captain of Team Singapore, taking the oath of the Games on behalf of all competing athletes.

The highlight of the evening is the Republic’s most famous football legend Fandi Ahmad and his son Irfan, lighting the cauldron in the finale of a colourful, two hour spectacle of music, dance and lights.

The pair were part of a 13 member torch relay that saw the SEA Games flame transported across the Kallang Basin to the National Stadium. Comprising current and past athletes, the torchbearers were selected from a variety of sports to symbolise how sports has grown in both depth and breadth in Singapore.

Overall, it was the perfect start to what promises to be a thrilling and entertaining 12 days of sporting competition.
